Clean dog leads, collars and harnesses according to their own care instructions, then let them dry fully before the next use. Start by identifying the material: a washable fabric strap, a padded harness and a leather collar may need different treatment, even when they belong to the same walking kit.

1. Find the instructions before filling the sink

Look for a care label or the manufacturer’s page for the exact model. Check the whole item, including padding and trim. EzyDog’s material guide gives different instructions for nylon and neoprene, so a nylon outer strap alone is not permission to machine wash a padded harness.

If the instructions have disappeared, ask the maker before soaking the item. Keep a copy of the reply with the model name so the next person doing the washing has the same information.

Our guide to checking pet product quality and washability is useful if you are trying to identify what a listing actually says about construction.

2. Prepare the kit and a drying space

Take the gear off the dog before cleaning. As a household routine, photograph adjustable strap settings and put any removable accessories together in a small container. Keep electronics out of the wash and follow their separate instructions.

Choose a time when the equipment can remain out of use until dry. If you have only one walking set, plan around that constraint before starting a full wash. A laundry bench or airer can be the drying station; you do not need a backyard to organise the job.

For a car-based outing, keep damp gear separate from the clean equipment waiting to go back inside. The guide to dog car seat covers and boot liners covers that separate part of the clean-up arrangement.

3. Remove dirt, then use the permitted wash method

Maytag recommends removing loose hair and debris first, with a soft brush where needed. For washable fabric gear, use the cleaning product and water temperature specified for that item, then rinse away the soap.

Do not choose a hot wash simply because the gear smells. If the instructions permit machine washing, follow the stated cycle; Maytag suggests a mesh laundry bag. If they permit only wiping or hand washing, keep to that method.

For neoprene, EzyDog specifies a damp cloth and mild soap and advises against machine washing. Treat that as material-specific guidance, with your model’s instructions deciding the method for the complete item.

4. Give leather its own care routine

For leather, EzyDog recommends gentle cleaning with a soft damp cloth and avoiding abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals. Its guidance calls for a pet-safe leather conditioner and natural drying at room temperature, away from heat.

Check which conditioner the maker approves for your collar or lead. Keep leather care separate from the fabric wash rather than placing the whole kit in one bowl. If the item combines leather with another material, ask for instructions covering that combination.

5. Let everything dry before putting it away

Maytag advises complete air drying before reuse and warns against tumble drying leads and harnesses. Include the padded sections and folded straps in your final dryness check.

As a storage routine, leave space around each item instead of piling the wet kit in a basket. Return it to the usual hook or drawer only when dry. Keep any item still being cleaned separate from the ready-to-use set so another household member does not have to guess.

6. Check condition before the next walk

Use cleaning time for this practical visual check:

  • Follow the lead from handle to clip, looking for cuts, fraying or chewed sections.
  • Look at stitching, strap edges and attachment points on the collar and harness.
  • Open and close buckles and clips to notice cracks or a mechanism that does not close normally.
  • Set visibly damaged or questionable gear aside and ask the manufacturer about replacement or an approved repair.

This checklist does not establish how much force an item can withstand. Avoid treating a cleaner appearance as proof that worn equipment is ready to use.

If you moved the adjusters, revisit fitting a collar and harness properly before the next walk. Start today by finding the care instructions for each piece and choosing somewhere it can stay until dry.

How we checked this

Checked on 22 September 2026 against EzyDog Australia and Maytag care guidance. This is an editorial comparison of instructions, with household planning suggestions. No equipment or cleaning method was tested; the item’s own instructions take priority.
