Washable dog beds that survive the machine

The part of a dog bed that fails in the wash is almost never the cover. It is the inner: foam that soaks up water and never fully dries, or loose fill that migrates into a lump at one end and never comes back.

Which is why the useful question is not whether a bed is washable. Every bed here says it is. The useful question is what the listing tells you to do with the inside, and on that the verified Australian market splits into three genuinely different arrangements, only one of which comes with real instructions.

Below are six beds from three Australian brands, with prices, stock and the published washing wording read from each manufacturer’s own listing on 12 September 2026.

How to read this list

This is a verified shortlist, not a complete market survey. Every product was read from a live manufacturer listing on the date shown. Petbarn, PETstock, Pet Circle, Kmart, Big W and Amazon Australia block automated access, so their beds could not be verified and are not listed. One major Australian bedding brand in the verified set, Snooza, publishes no washing wording at all across 74 listings and therefore does not appear below, which is a limit of the published evidence and not a criticism of the beds.

Nobody at Dovelyne has washed any of these. No brand publishes a wash cycle count, a shrinkage figure, a colourfastness rating or any test result. Everything below is what each manufacturer states about its own product.

The three arrangements

1. Removable cover, foam inner taken out. The cover unzips, the foam sections lift out, and only the cover goes in the machine. This is the arrangement most likely to survive repeated washing, because the part that holds water never gets wet. It is also the arrangement that fails most often in practice, because the foam gets put back into a cover that was not completely dry.

2. Removable cover, soft fill inner. The cover unzips and the inner cushion stays out of the machine. Same principle, less faff, and the inner is usually the thing that eventually flattens.

3. No removable cover, whole bed washed. The cover is stitched in and the entire bed goes in. Simpler, and there is nothing to put back wrong. The cost is a long dry time and a bed that is out of service for a day or two, which matters if it is the only one in the house.

None is better in the abstract. Arrangement three is the honest choice for a household that will not reliably reassemble a bed, and the listing that offers it says so plainly rather than pretending the cover comes off.

The verified options

Kazoo Cloud Comfort Dog Bed, from $99.95

Three sizes to $164.95, and the only listing in the verified Australian set that publishes full washing instructions: unzip the cover, remove the inner foam sections and keep them aside, gentle machine wash in cool water with mild detergent, air dry, and do not tumble dry because it may shrink the cover.

That last instruction is the one that ruins beds. A cover that has shrunk will not go back over the foam, and at that point the bed is finished. The listing also notes the bed ships shrink wrapped and takes about 48 hours to decompress to its final shape.

Suits: anyone who wants to be told what to actually do. On published evidence this is the clearest instruction set in the category by a distance.

Kazoo Wombat Dog Bed, from $115.96

Three sizes to $163.96. The listing describes an easily washable removable cover and carries the same instruction set: unzip, remove the inner foam sections, gentle cool machine wash with mild detergent, air dry, do not tumble dry.

Suits: the same reader as the Cloud Comfort, in a different shape. Buy on shape and price, since the washing arrangement is identical.

Mog & Bone Cushion Dog Bed, cotton canvas, from $75.95

Four sizes to $249.95, with a published size chart of 60 by 40 by 10cm small, 70 by 50 by 12cm medium and 80 by 60 by 14cm large. The listing states a removable machine washable cover, a soft internal cushion, a 100% cotton canvas cover, and that cotton regulates a pet’s body temperature more effectively than polyester and suits pets with sensitive skin.

Suits: the removable cover with a soft inner, arrangement two. Cotton canvas washes and wears well, and it is also the fabric most likely to shrink, so treat the Kazoo instruction about heat as applying here too even though this listing does not state it.

Mog & Bone Cushion Dog Bed, polyester blend, from $75.95

Same bed, same price, same four sizes, and a polyester and cotton blend cover instead of full cotton.

This is the most useful comparison in the article, because the two covers sit at an identical price under an identical product name. The blend will generally shrink less and dry faster. The full cotton is the one the brand itself attaches a temperature regulation claim to. Neither listing publishes a test behind either point, so choose on which property you want rather than on which is better.

Kazoo Storm Dog Pillow Bed, from $52.95

The cheapest verified bed here, four sizes from 76 by 53cm to 120 by 85cm, to $144.95. The listing states clearly that the cover is stitched into the bed and is not removable, but the whole bed can be washed.

Suits: arrangement three, and a household that would never reassemble a cover anyway. Being told the cover does not come off is worth more than a vague washable claim, and the price reflects the simpler construction rather than a compromise on cleaning.

Pablo & Co Deluxe Travel Car Bed, from $219.95

Two sizes to $309.95. The listing states removable and washable covers, a water resistant construction, an anti slip bottom, an internal car restraint included, and that it buckles around a single back seat.

Suits: a dog that travels, where the bed gets dirtier faster than any house bed. Water resistance is the relevant published property here: a bed that resists a wet dog needs washing less often, which does more for its lifespan than washability does. The car restraint is a stated inclusion and nothing in this article evaluates it as a safety device.

What the price buys

From $52.95 to $219.95 the published difference is construction and cover material, not a tested cleaning outcome. The $52.95 bed buys simplicity with a stitched-in cover. The $75.95 beds buy a removable cover in a choice of two fabrics. The $99.95 and $115.96 beds buy a removable cover plus the only published instructions. The $219.95 bed buys water resistance and travel features.

Nobody publishes a wash count or a shrinkage figure, so no bed here can be ranked on how well it survives the machine. What can be said is which arrangement each one uses and what each brand tells you to do.

Choosing quickly

You want to be told exactly how to wash it: Kazoo Cloud Comfort from $99.95.

Cheapest, and you will not fuss with covers: Kazoo Storm from $52.95, whole bed in the machine.

Removable cover, natural fabric: Mog & Bone cotton canvas from $75.95.

Removable cover, dries fastest: Mog & Bone polyester blend from $75.95.

The dog travels and the bed gets filthy: Pablo & Co travel bed from $219.95.

How to not wreck it

These follow from the published instructions and from how the beds are built.

Do not tumble dry. One brand states this explicitly and there is no reason to think it applies only to that brand. Heat shrinks covers, and a shrunk cover will not go back over the foam.

Take the foam out. Both Kazoo beds say to. Foam that gets soaked takes days to dry through, and a foam inner put back damp is how a clean bed starts to smell within a week.

Wash cool, with mild detergent. Strong detergent residue in a bed a dog sleeps on with its face is worth avoiding on ordinary grounds, and the only published instruction set specifies mild.

Have somewhere for the dog to sleep while it dries. This is the practical reason a second cheap bed is worth more than a single expensive one, and it is the main argument for arrangement one over arrangement three.

Put the cover back on before it is bone dry only if you enjoy the smell. It is the single most common way an otherwise good bed is ruined.
