Gifts for dog owners that the dog also benefits from

The problem with buying a gift for a dog owner is that almost everything good needs a measurement you do not have.

So sort the options into two piles: things that do not need sizing, which you can buy confidently, and things that do, which you should only buy if you genuinely know the dog.

This guide compares published prices and Australian retailer listings. Nothing here was used with an animal by us.

Safe without knowing the dog’s size

Towels, and a proper one. A large dedicated dog towel for the car after a beach trip. Deeply unglamorous and genuinely used.

A bed cover rather than a bed. Beds need sizing; covers for a bed the owner already has do not, if you know the brand. Snooza’s Organic Pet Futon Cover was $26.90 on 13 September 2026. Ask first, then buy.

A bowl with a stand, which is size-flexible in a way collars are not. Mog & Bone’s single bamboo bowl with stand was $39.95 on 13 September 2026.

Something for the car. A boot liner or seat cover fits the car rather than the dog, so you need the car and not the measurements.

Consumables. Poo bags, wipes, a brush, a tick comb. Nobody is thrilled and everybody uses them.

A gift card to their vet or their usual pet shop, which is the honest answer when you do not know the dog at all.

Needs sizing, so only if you know the dog

A harness. The most useful gift on this list and the easiest to get wrong. Ruffwear’s Front Range Flex Harness was $119.95 and the Web Master Harness with Handle $129.95 on 13 September 2026. Both are the sort of thing an owner would not buy for themselves and would use daily.

If you are buying one, get the girth measurement from the owner first, keep the receipt, and understand that fit is the whole point. Fitting a collar and harness properly explains why a guess does not work.

A collar. Same problem, plus a preference problem.

A coat. Sizing, plus most Australian dogs do not need one.

A bed. Needs the dog’s stretched-out length, not its shoulder height, and the owner has usually already made a decision about where it goes. Where to put a dog bed is the reason that decision is not casual.

A crate. Both sized and a household decision.

Categories to leave alone

Not because they are bad gifts, but because they are the owner’s call and a vet’s territory.

• Food and treats, if the dog has any dietary restriction, which many do and which the owner may not have mentioned
• Anything medicated. Flea, tick and worming products, supplements, skin products. These are veterinary decisions, they are prescribed for a specific animal, and they are not a gift
• Chews and bones. Choking and dental fracture risks are real, cooked bones are not recommended, and what a given dog handles safely is something only the owner knows
• Toys for a heavy chewer, unless you know the dog destroys things, in which case buy for that specifically
• Anything scented, because dogs and their owners are stuck with it

The gifts that are not objects

Frequently the best ones.

• Paying for a groom, particularly for a dog that needs a professional and an owner who is putting it off
• A training class, if you know they want one. Ask first, because it commits their weekends
• Offering to dog-sit, written down as a voucher so it is real. This is the most valuable thing on this page and it costs nothing
• A washed car, if you have ever been in theirs after a beach trip

The sizing conversation

If you want to buy something fitted, just ask. Most owners would much rather answer a question than receive the wrong size.

What to ask for: the girth measurement behind the front legs, the dog’s weight, and what brand they use now. Then check that brand’s own size chart rather than assuming a medium is a medium.

Keep the receipt regardless. Australian Consumer Law does not require a retailer to refund a change of mind, so a gift receipt is worth asking for at the counter.

• Decide whether you know the dog’s measurements. If not, buy from the first list
• Ask before buying anything worn, eaten or medicated
• Consumables and enrichment are always safe and always used
• Offer time rather than an object if you know them well
• Keep the gift receipt
