Slow feeder bowls and lick mats: how to choose one

Three different products get sold as the same thing, and buying the wrong one is why so many end up in a cupboard.

• A maze or ridged bowl slows dry food. The dog has to work kibble out of channels
• A lick mat stretches a soft or wet food into a long, repetitive licking task
• A puzzle feeder makes the dog solve something to release food, usually dry

They are not substitutes. Match the format to the food and to the problem.

Which one for which problem

“He inhales his dinner in ten seconds.” A maze bowl, sized for the meal. This is the direct answer.

“She is bored and destructive when I am out.” A lick mat or a puzzle feeder, because the point is duration rather than pace. Enrichment toys for a dog left alone covers that job properly.

“He is anxious at bath time, grooming or in the car.” A lick mat stuck to a wall or a hard surface. Licking is a settling activity for many dogs and the mat gives it a place to happen.

“I need to make a small meal last.” A lick mat with the meal spread thin and frozen.

“She is a cat.” All three exist for cats, in smaller sizes, and cats often take to a lick mat more readily than a maze bowl.

Maze bowls: sizing is where it goes wrong

The common mistake is buying a bowl whose channels hold less than the meal. Food ends up piled on top of the maze, the dog eats the pile in ten seconds, and nothing has been slowed.

• Check the stated capacity against the actual meal, not against the dog’s size
• Deeper, wider channels suit large kibble; a fine maze designed for small kibble blocks with large pieces
• Check the base. A light plastic bowl gets pushed around the kitchen and then flipped. Rubber feet or a weighted base matter more than the maze design
• Difficulty should match the dog. A dog that cannot get the food out gives up, and a dog that finds it trivial is not slowed

Lick mats: the format that has to be matched to food

A lick mat is a textured surface for something spreadable. Dry kibble does not work on one.

• What goes on it: wet food, a soft treat paste, plain yoghurt, mashed vegetables, or the dog’s own wet meal. Keep it to food the dog already eats
• Freeze it to multiply the duration, and in an Australian summer a frozen mat is a cooling activity as well
• Size to the job. LickiMat’s Slomo XL was $39.99 and the Classic Riser $41.99 on 13 September 2026. A riser design lifts the mat, which suits a flat-faced dog that struggles with a mat flat on the floor
• Suction or not. A mat that sticks to a tile or a bath wall stays put; one on carpet will be carried to the couch
• Supervise a determined chewer. A dog that chews the mat rather than licking it is not a candidate for one

A caution about what goes on it: stick to food the dog normally eats. Several human foods are toxic to dogs, and a lick mat is exactly where a household improvises.

Puzzle feeders

• Start easy. A puzzle the dog cannot solve is abandoned, and then it is never tried again
• Escalating sets exist for this reason
• They make noise on a hard floor, which matters if you are on a video call
• They are not a substitute for a walk

Cleaning, which decides whether it keeps being used

This is the practical failure point for all three formats.

• Check dishwasher safety on the listing. A maze bowl hand-washed daily gets used for a fortnight
• Silicone lick mats need a brush to get into the texture, and food dries hard in them
• Wash after every wet meal. Wet food left in a mat in Australian heat is a problem by the afternoon
• Replace a chewed or gouged mat, because scored plastic and silicone hold bacteria and are harder to clean properly

What this article does not do

Worth saying plainly. Slow feeders are often sold with claims about preventing bloat, aiding digestion or managing weight.

This is a buying guide, not veterinary advice, and no such claim is made here. If your dog eats abnormally fast, gulps and gags, has suddenly changed how it eats, retches or has a distended abdomen, that is a conversation with a vet rather than a purchase. A deep-chested dog and a sudden abdominal problem is an emergency.

Feeding quantities, diet and weight are also a vet’s territory rather than a bowl’s. Stopping a dog inhaling dinner in twelve seconds covers the non-product side, and storing pet food so it does not go off covers what happens between meals.

Before you buy

• Identify which of the three problems you actually have
• Check the capacity against the meal you actually feed
• Check the base weight or feet, because a bowl that slides is a bowl that gets flipped
• Check dishwasher safety
• Match the format to wet or dry food, and do not expect one product to do both
