Enrichment for a dog home alone: what to buy

Start with an honest expectation. No product occupies a dog for eight hours. A frozen lick mat might run twenty to forty minutes. A stuffed feeder that is well packed might do longer.

What enrichment actually buys you is the first hour, which is the hour that matters. The departure and the period straight after it are when a dog is most unsettled and when most damage happens. Something absorbing at that moment changes the shape of the whole day.

The four types, and what each is for

Lick mats. Textured surfaces for spreadable food. Licking is a repetitive, settling activity for many dogs, which makes these the best departure-moment product. Stuffable rubber feeders. Hollow toys packed with food and frozen. Longer lasting than a mat, tougher, and they bounce around, which is either good or noisy depending on your floors and your neighbours.

Puzzle feeders and treat dispensers. The dog solves something to release food. Good mental work, usually shorter duration, and the dog needs to have learned the puzzle while you were there.

Chews. The longest duration of anything, and the one with the most caveats. Unsupervised chewing is where choking and broken teeth happen, and hard chews and cooked bones are a genuine veterinary risk. If a dog is alone, a chew has to be one you already know that dog handles safely.

Freeze everything

This is the single highest-value technique in the category.

• Freezing multiplies the duration of a lick mat or a stuffed feeder several times over
• In an Australian summer, frozen enrichment is also cooling, which matters on a hot day at home
• Make several at once. Fill four mats on Sunday, freeze them, use one a day. The whole thing takes ten minutes a week
• Use the dog’s own food. Wet food, soaked kibble, or part of the daily ration. That keeps the calories honest without anyone having to count them

A caution about fillings. Stick to food the dog already eats. Chocolate, grapes and sultanas, onion and garlic, macadamias and xylitol are toxic to dogs, and enrichment is exactly where a household improvises with whatever is in the fridge.

Staging the day

A product list is less useful than an order of events.

1. Before you leave: a walk or a play session, so the dog is tired rather than fresh
2. At the moment of departure: the frozen lick mat, given as you go, so departure predicts something good
3. Mid-morning, if you can automate it: a timed feeder or a scattered handful left in a snuffle mat
4. Rotate what is available. A toy that is always out is furniture. Cheap enrichment using things already in the house covers rotation properly
5. On return: calm. Making the return a big event makes the absence a bigger one

Buying notes

• Size to the dog. A mat or toy small enough to fit in a large dog’s mouth is a choking hazard rather than an activity
• Check dishwasher safety. Anything used with wet food daily and washed by hand stops being used within a fortnight
• Suction or weighted bases keep a mat in one place; without them it gets carried to the couch
• Buy more than one. The point is rotation, and four cheap ones beat one expensive one
• Replace anything gouged or chewed through. Scored silicone and plastic hold bacteria and shed pieces

When it is not boredom

This is the most important section, and it is where a purchase is the wrong response.

Some dogs left alone are not bored, they are distressed. The signs are different from boredom: distress that starts at or before departure rather than later, destruction concentrated at doors and windows rather than at random objects, persistent howling or barking, toileting indoors in a house-trained dog, drooling, pacing, or self-injury trying to escape.

That is separation-related distress, and no toy fixes it. A lick mat given to a distressed dog is often ignored entirely, which is itself a useful diagnostic.
