What is in this guide
To wash a dog bed without ruining the filling, separate the cover from the inserts and follow each component’s care instructions. Wash the filling only when its own instructions permit it, keep washable loose fill contained, and finish drying before putting the bed back together.
The important decision comes before choosing a washing cycle: does permission to wash apply to the cover, the inner cushion or the entire assembled bed? This guide concentrates on protecting the inner. For the broader laundry routine, use washing pet bedding properly.
1. Take the bed apart before deciding what to wash
Unzip the outer cover if it is designed to come off. Lay the base, side bolsters, cushion and any separate liner beside it. Take a quick photograph of their arrangement, particularly if several similar inserts fit into different pockets.
Look for instructions on each component and in the manufacturer’s care information. Write down which pieces are machine washable, hand washable or limited to another specified cleaning method. Do not transfer the cover’s instructions to an unlabelled insert.
Keep parts together by position while you work. A simple note saying “back bolster” or “base” is useful when the covers and inserts will be drying in separate places. This also gives another household member enough information to reassemble the bed without guessing.
2. Identify the filling, then check its actual permission
A solid foam slab, a cushion of loose fibre and a mixed foam-and-fibre insert should not automatically receive the same treatment. Maytag warns that some foam inserts cannot tolerate machine washing or full submersion because excess water can break down the foam. [S1]
That warning does not establish that every material containing foam is unwashable. Australian manufacturer Snooza allows its EcoFresh fibre-and-foam-crumb filling to be machine washed while contained, under its specified care settings. [S2] The permission belongs to that filling and its instructions.
Use these decisions for your own bed:
- Cover washable, insert not washable: remove the insert and wash the cover separately. Use only the insert’s specified cleaning method.
- Insert explicitly washable: follow its instructions, including containment and drying requirements.
- Whole bed explicitly washable: check the instructions for the assembled bed rather than assuming removable parts need separate cycles.
- Instructions missing or ambiguous: ask the manufacturer before soaking the inner. A removable cover alone is not permission.
If a listing says “easy clean” without identifying the washable components, it has not answered the question you need answered. Ask specifically about the base and bolsters, rather than whether the bed is washable in general.
3. Inspect the inner before getting it wet
Check the casing for open seams, holes and a closure that will not stay shut. If loose filling is already escaping, stop and obtain repair or care advice before washing it. Do not empty stuffing directly into the drum.
Snooza’s directions for its washable EcoFresh explicitly require containment in the bed, inner or suitable laundry bag. [S2] Follow your bed’s equivalent directions rather than substituting an improvised bag and assuming it provides the same containment.
Make a note of existing lumps, flattened patches or torn foam. This gives you something concrete to compare afterwards. Washing is a cleaning step, so do not plan on it repairing damage that was present before the load started.
Remove loose hair from the cover before laundering, as Maytag recommends. [S1] If the surrounding couch or carpet also needs attention, keep that as a separate job using the pet hair cleanup checklist.
4. Plan the wash around the insert’s limits
Put the insert’s instructions beside the machine before starting. Check the permitted washing method, temperature, detergent directions and any restrictions on spinning or drying. If the instructions do not address something you need to decide, seek clarification rather than borrowing settings from a different bed.
Treat the washer’s capacity and load directions as a separate check. A bed being labelled machine washable does not establish that it suits your particular machine. If compatibility is uncertain, check the appliance manual or manufacturer before loading it.
For a hand-wash-only inner, follow the supplied method. Hand washing still involves water and handling, so it is not a fallback for an insert that prohibits immersion. Similarly, a larger laundry machine does not change a filling’s care limits.
You can wash a permitted cover while leaving an inner awaiting advice. Keep the job list specific: “cover cleaned, base not yet treated” prevents someone mistaking a clean exterior for a completed bed wash.
5. Reserve drying space before starting
Decide where each permitted wet component will dry and how you will follow its drying instructions. In a unit with one rack, that may mean doing the cover first and the washable inserts later. Avoid starting every piece simply because there is room in the washing machine.
Use tumble drying only when the relevant care instructions allow it. Maytag distinguishes permitted tumble drying from air drying and says bedding should dry inside and out before reuse. [S1] Do not assume the cover’s dryer permission includes the filling.
Keep separately washed parts accessible while they dry. Check the thick sections, corners and underside before reassembly; obvious dampness means the job needs more time. These are practical observations, not a measurement of moisture hidden inside an insert. Where dryness remains uncertain, leave the cover off and ask for guidance rather than relying on a dry outer surface.
6. Check shape and seams before putting it back
Compare the dry inner with your earlier note. Check whether the casing is intact, the filling remains contained and each component fits its original pocket. Follow any manufacturer instructions for reshaping or redistributing washable fill.
If a lump persists, do not immediately run another wash. Check whether the maker provides a reshaping method, repair option or replacement insert. Avoid opening a sealed inner or pulling at foam to force the original shape back.
Persistent smell needs a different follow-up from a misshapen cushion. Use keeping a dog bed from smelling to check the source rather than repeatedly washing an inner whose limits are unclear.
For the next wash, save the care instructions with your component photograph. Start now by separating the cover and locating the base insert’s instructions; that is the decision that determines the rest of the job.
How we checked this: Checked on 11 October 2026 against Maytag’s dog-bed laundry guidance and Snooza’s filling-specific care directions. The component notes, inspection sequence and household drying plan are editorial suggestions. No bed or washing method was tested.
