  7. How we checked this

Clear loose throws, clean the couch with tools its care instructions allow, then vacuum the surrounding carpet and check the machine for trapped hair. Work on one resting spot at a time: a thorough pass over the favourite seat and the floor beside it is a useful place to start.

Check the surface before choosing the tool

Gather your vacuum, its upholstery and crevice attachments, and a bag or bin for collected hair. Keep the couch care instructions and carpet manufacturer’s guidance nearby, even if that means looking up the model before starting. IKEA’s upholstery guide makes material-specific care the starting point, because fabric, leather and microfibre need different handling. [S2]

Use this first checklist before touching the furniture:

  • Read the couch’s care label or care page.
  • Check whether its covers can be removed and washed.
  • Check the carpet instructions for the permitted vacuum head and brush setting.
  • Confirm the surfaces are dry and clear away coins, toys and other objects.
  • Put the pet somewhere comfortable away from the section you are cleaning.

A zip is not a washing instruction. If care information is missing, ask the manufacturer before washing a cushion cover or using a new friction tool. Keep this session to the dry cleaning you know is permitted.

1. Lift throws and expose the couch

  • Fold a hairy throw inward as you lift it, and set it aside for separate cleaning.
  • Remove loose cushions only where the furniture design allows.
  • Look beneath the cushions and along the backrest before replacing anything.

The point is to expose the seat rather than clean around a blanket. Start with the place your pet actually sleeps, then move to neighbouring cushions if they need attention. There is no need to dismantle the whole lounge suite to finish one seat.

Check each loose textile’s own label. If it needs washing, reserve drying space before starting a load, especially in a flat with one rack. For the separate bedding job, follow washing pet bedding properly rather than applying the couch’s instructions to a pet blanket or bed.

2. Clean the couch gently, including the seams

  • Fit the upholstery attachment allowed by the furniture’s instructions.
  • Vacuum the seat, backrest and arms in small sections.
  • Use a suitable attachment along seams and cushion gaps.
  • Inspect each finished section before moving on.

IKEA recommends an upholstery brush for seams and crevices and cautions against excessive suction on covers. [S2] If fabric pulls into the nozzle, pause and check the permitted setting and attachment. Do not treat stronger suction as the automatic answer to hair left behind.

For remaining hair on suitable fabric, IKEA also suggests a rubber glove or rubberised cloth. [S2] Try a clean, dry glove gently on a concealed patch first, provided the furniture instructions allow this approach. If the material snags, pills or changes appearance, stop. If the trial is satisfactory, use light strokes on a small area, collect the gathered hair and vacuum the loose remainder.

This is an optional follow-up, not permission to scrub every couch. Leave rubber tools off leather, suede, loose weaves or other finishes unless the manufacturer confirms suitability. Metal scrapers, abrasive stones and hard carpet rakes are not part of this couch checklist.

3. Vacuum the carpet in manageable sections

  • Clear the floor beside the couch and pet bed.
  • Select the head and setting permitted for that carpet.
  • Work through one section with overlapping passes.
  • Inspect the pet’s resting patch and repeat only where hair remains.

Dyson Australia explains that hair can become trodden into carpet and that brush agitation helps dislodge it. [S1] That explains why a brush-equipped head may help, but it does not establish that every carpet can take one. Dyson’s own V6 manual warns that a brush bar can damage certain carpets and floors. [S3] The carpet instructions decide whether agitation is appropriate.

Move steadily enough to keep track of the area covered. If hair remains, check the head, setting and machine before making repeated passes across the whole room. Stop if you see pulled fibres or a change in the pile, and ask the carpet manufacturer about the correct method.

For fur across entrances, hard floors and the rest of the house, dog fur, floors and a clean house covers the broader routine. Keep this job centred on the couch and its surrounding carpet.

4. Check edges and the space underneath

  • Use the permitted crevice attachment beside skirting boards and couch feet.
  • Check the accessible space under the couch.
  • Clean the floor exposed by moving the pet bed.
  • Replace cushions and dry textiles only after checking the surfaces underneath.

Use attachments that reach comfortably. You do not need to lift heavy furniture alone to complete the checklist. If moving the couch requires help, leave that task for when someone is available and clean the accessible edges now.

If the visible hair is gone but the carpet still smells, make that a separate job. Getting pet smell out of carpet addresses odour troubleshooting; this checklist does not add sprays or powders to a dry hair-removal session.

5. Finish with the vacuum and a short room check

  • Switch off and disconnect the vacuum as its manual directs before maintenance.
  • Check the brush roll and accessible air path using the manual’s procedure.
  • Remove trapped hair only by the approved method.
  • Empty the bin or replace the bag when the machine’s instructions require it.
  • Check the favourite seat, cushion seams and nearby floor once more.

Dyson’s V6 instructions specifically call for checking the brush bar and clearing debris such as hair. [S3] Use your own model’s instructions for opening the head, cleaning filters and reassembly. Washing a filter or attachment is a separate maintenance task, with its own drying requirements.

Choose the next clean by what you see. A quick check of the favourite seat between fuller sessions may suit your household better than repeatedly vacuuming every room. If visitors are coming, keeping a house with pets smelling normal helps put this task alongside the other jobs in the guest area.

Start with the couch care instructions today, then finish one seat and the carpet beside it before expanding the job.

How we checked this

Checked on 8 October 2026 against Dyson Australia’s pet-hair guidance and V6 operating manual, and IKEA’s upholstery-care guide. The order and completion checks are editorial suggestions. No cleaning methods were tested, and individual furniture, carpet and appliance instructions take precedence.
