Family tents: why a 6-person tent does not sleep six

A tent’s person rating is the number of adult sleeping mats that fit side by side on the floor, touching, with nothing else in the tent.

No bags. No standing up. Nobody getting out in the night without climbing over somebody.

The working rule: for a comfortable family trip, buy roughly double the person rating you need. A family of four wants a tent rated for eight, or a six-person tent with a separate living area.

This guide compares published specifications and Australian retailer listings. No tent was pitched, slept in or weather-tested by us.

The specification that actually separates tents

Waterhead, or hydrostatic head. A millimetre figure describing how much water pressure the fabric resists before it leaks. It is published on most Australian listings and it is the single most useful comparison in the category.

• The Shade Dome Deluxe Portico lists a 1500 mm waterhead, at $289.99

Sea to Summit’s Ikos Lightweight Tent lists a 68D polyester floor with a 4000 mm hydrostatic head, at $412.49 on the same date.

How to read those numbers:

• 1000 to 1500 mm. Fine for a fine-weather campground weekend. It will handle a shower and it will struggle with sustained heavy rain
• 2000 to 3000 mm. The sensible family range. Copes with an Australian summer downpour
• 3000 mm and above. Serious weather, and usually a heavier and dearer tent
• The floor should be higher rated than the fly, because the floor takes pressure every time somebody kneels on wet ground

Denier, the D number, describes fabric thickness rather than waterproofing. 150D is a thick, heavy family-tent fabric; 68D is a lighter hiking fabric. A high denier tent is tougher and heavier, and for a campground trip that trade is usually worth it.

Dome, cabin or fast-frame

Dome. Sloped walls, good in wind, cheapest per person, and the sloped walls mean the usable floor is smaller than the stated floor. OZtrail’s Tasman 10P Dome was $259.99 and the Bungalow 9P Dome $339.99 on 13 September 2026, which is why large dome tents are the value end of the category.

Cabin. Near-vertical walls, so nearly all of the floor is usable and adults can stand. Bigger, heavier, and worse in wind.

Fast-frame or instant. The poles stay attached and the frame unfolds. Pitching drops from thirty minutes to a few. OZtrail’s Fast Frame 4P was $299.99 and the Fast Frame 6P $349.99 on 13 September 2026. For a family arriving at a campground at 5pm with tired children, this is worth real money.

Air or inflatable. Beams instead of poles, very fast, very expensive, and a puncture is a different kind of problem.

Which to buy first: for a family’s first tent at a campground, a fast-frame in the 6P to 8P range with a 2000 mm or better waterhead is the least regretted purchase.

The features that matter in Australia

• Ventilation. More important here than waterproofing for most of the year. Mesh panels on two sides, a vented fly, and windows that open with the fly closed
• A separate living or annex area. The difference between a tent you sleep in and a tent you can sit in through an afternoon of rain
• Blockout or dark-room fabric. OZtrail’s BlockOut range is this. In an Australian summer a tent is unusable from 6am without it, and with small children that is the whole trip
• Insect screens on everything, doors included
• Floor type. A heavy-duty PE bucket floor, where the floor material continues up the wall, keeps water out at ground level
• Pegs. Supplied pegs are usually the weakest component. Budget for better ones
• Pack size and weight, against the car you actually own

Safety, briefly

• Nothing that burns goes inside a tent. No stoves, no lanterns with a flame, no fuel-burning heaters, no barbecues. Carbon monoxide from a fuel appliance in an enclosed tent is lethal and has killed campers in Australia
• Check fire restrictions and total fire bans with the relevant state fire authority before you light anything, every trip
• Check the weather and any warnings before and during, and know the site’s flood behaviour. A dry creek bed is a campsite until it is not
• Peg it out properly every time, including the guy ropes. Most tent failures in wind are pitching failures
• Leave a trip plan with somebody if you are going anywhere remote

Before you buy

• Halve the person rating, then choose
• Compare waterhead before price, and aim at 2000 mm or better for a family
• Choose fast-frame if pitching in the dark with children is a realistic scenario
• Check ventilation and blockout, which matter more than waterproofing for most Australian trips
• Budget separately for decent pegs and a groundsheet or footprint
• Pitch it in the backyard once before the trip, which is the single best piece of advice in this article
