Compare the space left for your family’s content and the activity behind each battery claim before choosing a tablet. Start with the apps and downloads you need, then check whether the quoted runtime describes anything close to the way the device will be used between charges.

Comparing tablet storage and battery is easier with a short list of household jobs beside the specifications. A tablet for streaming at home presents a different decision from one expected to hold holiday downloads and school projects. If the purpose is still unclear, start with the questions to ask before buying a kids tech device.

1. Write down what must work away from home

List the activities you actually want the tablet to support. Include school apps, reading, games, video calls, photos and anything you want downloaded before a trip. For a shared tablet, ask each person what they expect to keep on it rather than building the list around the first child’s preferences.

Separate that list into three groups: things that must stay available, things you are happy to remove after use, and things you only expect to access at home. This gives you a basis for comparing capacity without treating the largest storage option as the automatic answer.

For school use, obtain the school’s current device requirements before shortlisting. Record any required storage or battery provision exactly as written, and ask about anything unclear. Our guide to BYOD device rules at Australian schools covers that earlier eligibility check. A tablet that fails the school’s requirements should not remain on the school shortlist because its entertainment specifications look attractive.

2. Check used space, not just the capacity label

The advertised capacity is not a promise that all of it will be available for your own files. Apple’s storage guidance identifies operating-system space alongside apps, media and other stored content. It also distinguishes an app from the documents and data associated with it. [S1]

If you already have an iPad, open Settings, General, then iPad Storage. Record the used space and the largest categories. Apple provides this view to show how storage is being used. [S1] On another tablet, find the equivalent instructions in its manufacturer’s support information.

Use that reading as a starting point, then ask what the replacement needs to hold that the old device does not. Have you been deleting favourite games to make room? Will schoolwork be added? Are you planning to keep more photos locally? Those answers are more useful than applying a single capacity recommendation to every family.

Ask for the available storage after setup for the exact model and configuration where that information is published. If it is not available, record it as unknown. Avoid deducting an arbitrary percentage from every tablet’s advertised capacity and presenting the result as a specification.

3. Keep cloud space and expansion separate

Cloud storage should have its own line on your comparison sheet. Apple distinguishes iCloud storage from storage physically on an iPhone or iPad; they are not one combined allowance. Its storage guidance also counts locally downloaded iCloud Drive content towards device usage. [S1, S2]

For travel, write down which files and entertainment you want available without a connection. Check the relevant app’s download instructions and storage requirements before assuming that a cloud account will cover the job. If you already use the app, look at the space occupied by the particular downloads you intend to keep.

Treat expandable storage as another question to verify. Ask whether the exact tablet supports a memory card, which cards it accepts, and whether the apps and content you care about can use it. Until those points are confirmed in the device and app documentation, do not count a proposed card as a solution to limited internal space.

There is also a practical choice here: who will manage downloads? If nobody wants the recurring job of clearing space before a trip, record that preference before choosing the smaller option. If rotating a modest selection suits your household, make that the plan rather than paying for capacity without a purpose.

4. Read the activity beside the battery hours

Copy the whole battery claim, including the words describing the activity. Apple’s Australian tablet specifications, for example, separate Wi-Fi browsing or video use from browsing over a mobile data network. These are distinct claims within the same specification sheet. [S3]

For each shortlisted device, look for the test notes and record:

  • What was running: video playback, web browsing or another workload.
  • Whether the connection was Wi-Fi, mobile data or offline.
  • The screen brightness and other settings, where stated.
  • Whether the figure describes active use or standby.
  • Any missing information that prevents a fair comparison.

Do not treat a longer quoted video runtime as proof that one tablet will last longer for schoolwork or gaming. Where the workloads differ, mark the figures as not directly comparable. A claim without enough detail remains uncertain; it does not become more useful because the number is impressive.

Brightness, network choice and background activity matter too. Apple’s battery guidance identifies these as factors affecting battery use. [S4] When reading an independent review, favour a clearly described test applied consistently across the devices being compared. Keep that result labelled with its workload rather than turning it into a guaranteed number of hours for your family.

5. Match charging to the day’s handovers

Write down when the tablet must be available and when charging is realistic. Think through the handover from homework to a sibling’s entertainment, or from a morning journey to an afternoon activity. The useful question is whether your plan depends on a charge that nobody will have time to arrange.

Check the manufacturer’s charging requirements, what comes in the Australian box, and the equipment used for any advertised charging-time claim. Do not assume that a spare household charger reproduces the conditions behind that claim.

Keep runtime and long-term battery condition separate. Apple defines battery life as time between charges and battery lifespan as time until replacement is needed. [S4] For a refurbished tablet, ask the seller what battery condition it promises and how that is assessed. The original model’s runtime claim does not answer that purchasing question.

For the broader school purchase, the guide to devices and BYOD costs helps frame the expenses beyond the tablet itself.

6. Complete the same worksheet for each option

Use one row per question, with a column for each exact model. Leave gaps visible rather than filling them with assumptions.

Record thisUse it to decide
Exact model and storage optionWhether the listing and supporting documents describe the same device
Current used space and planned additionsWhether the proposed capacity has a clear purpose
Content needed offlineWhat must fit locally before leaving home
Verified expansion supportWhether a card helps with your particular content
Battery claim and test activityWhether the quoted hours can fairly be compared
Charging requirements and opportunitiesWhether the household routine is workable
Unanswered questionsWhat to ask the retailer or manufacturer before choosing

Your next step: fill in the worksheet for the two tablets you are seriously considering. Ask for the missing storage or battery detail that would change your choice before deciding which configuration to buy.

How we checked this

Checked on 28 September 2026 against Apple’s Australian technical and support documentation. This is an editorial method for reading claims, not a tablet test or product ranking. Verify model-specific details for each device on your shortlist.
